Description: Dentistry is stressful, we all struggle with juggling professional, financial and personal commitments. Dentists are four times more likely to retire early on health grounds than their medical colleagues. Musculoskeletal and back pain, stress and burn out are high on the list of causes. Whilst Gerry won't be able to solve these issues in an evening, he will be introducing us to the concept of wellbeing and encouraging us to take more care of ourselves. Wear comfortable clothing - be prepared to move around. During many years working as both a dentist and as an osteopath, Gerry became convinced that more could be done to reduce the impact of musculoskeletal problems among dentists and dental personnel by adopting a truly holistic, biopsychosocial approach, with a strong emphasis on physical conditioning. Gerry has devoted 15 years developing solutions to these problems, resulting in a series of highly practical and enjoyable lectures. His aim is to help all those who work in dentistry to enjoy long, fulfilling and enjoyable careers. A healthy and nutritious light buffet will be available from 6pm. We aim to start the course at 6.30, planning to finish at 8.30. All members of the dental team, at any stage of their career are very welcome.

Description: Wendy Bellis is a Specialist Paediatric Dentist and Honorary Clinical Senior Teaching Fellow at the Eastman Dental Institute. Her areas of expertise are in behaviour management of children and dental management of the autistic child. Wendy's clinical work has almost exclusively been in the field of autistic spectrum disorder and she lectures widely at national and international level on this subject. We are very fortunate that Wendy has agreed to come to Plymouth and share her knowledge and experience with us on a topic that is encountered regularly in general dental practice as well as the more specialised services.

Description: This FREE session on dementia training, suitable for all members of the dental team will inform the us about dementia and how we can best provide care for our patients. It is widely recognised that people with dementia are not getting the service they require with respect to oral health. As a result of discussions with the University of Plymouth Dental School, it was agreed that Ian Sherriff B.E.M. would design and implement an interactive practical solution-based dementia training programme. The following programme was designed in conjunction with, Dr Rupert Noad consultant neuropsychiatric, Hilary Cragg Solicitor at Nash and Co, Plymouth, Dorothy Tudor and her husband Bob individual with dementia and his carer, Dr Helen Phillips and Claire Puckey, Plymouth City Council. There will be a session on practical guidance for the dental team.
