Description: With the rapid developments in dental materials science and with the new products appearing on the market at an ever-increasing rate, dental practitioners are increasingly looking to the dental material science community to give them steer on the selection of dental materials. This is happening at a time when we have also moved into the era of evidence based dentistry, such that the selection of dental materials should also be based on the evidence available. The oral environment is extremely complex and many factors influence the performance of a dental material. A direct relationship between materials properties and clinical performance simply does not exist. In this lecture it will be argued that one of the missing links in bridging this chasm is the application of engineering principles to dentistry.
