DescriptionThe overall aim of this course is to improve learners’ ability to describe in appropriate detail current contractual models and the clinical pathway. Specific aims are to build understanding of the NHS General Dental Services Contract in England and enable learners to maintain best practice in record-keeping and documentation.
Additional informationObjectives:
• To explain the structure, principles, rules and regulations associated with working as a dentist in the NHS
• To investigate the charging structure relating to treatment provided for patients in general practice, including measurement of dental activity through Courses of Treatment and Units of Dental Activity in NHS dentistry, private fee-per-item and capitation schemes
• To discuss the clinical pathway
• To provide training in maintaining best practice in record-keeping and documentation and discuss recent developments in information governance policy and practice.

This course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an introduction to NHS dentistry and is essential for dentists who are undertaking Foundation Training by Equivalence. This course is also suitable for dentists who are new to the NHS and dentists returning to NHS practice. Other dentists are also invited to attend this essential one day course.

Dr Manish Chitnis BDS, IQE, MFGDP RCS Eng MFDS RCPS Glasgow, GDC 102053, has been in general dental practice for 17 years and is a hands-on Practice Owner in Hampshire. Manish holds a Certificate in Business Management Skills in Dentistry and has a particular interest in Clinical Governance, lecturing on this topic at postgraduate level. Manish is a Clinical Advisor for a Dental Corporate, a Training Programme Director – Foundation Training by Equivalence (FTQ), and also a FTQ Trainer.

Aims
  1. Demonstrate ability in the decision-making process, so as to comply consistently with NHS General Dental Services Contract Regulations
  2. Describe and summarise the charging structures in dentistry, including the weightings used to convert Courses of Treatment into Units of Dental Activity, so as to apply the correct costings every time
  3. Use the clinical pathway to provide patients with a preventive care plan indicating their risk, so as to assist in the transfer of responsibility for patient self-care
  4. Maintain best practice in record-keeping and documentation in accordance with statutory, Department of Health and other requirements for patient records
