Description: Dr Martin Fulford originally trained as a microbiologist and spent 13 years as a practical medical microbiologist. Retrained as a dentist in his mid thirties and then spent 17 years working as a general dental practitioner in the UK. During this time he managed to combine clinical dentistry with research, mainly in the field of infection control. Although now retired from clinical practice he is still active in research and is a scientific adviser, with a particular interest in infection control, to the British Dental Association. As an expert witness for the GDC's Professional Conduct Committee, this popular speaker is well-placed to deliver insights into good prescribing practice for dental conditions and to provide strategies for minimising risks of a GDC investigation.

Description: The course will cover various methods of improving anterior aesthetics but will concentrate on new direct composite veneers (Componeers) and composite layering techniques.There will be an overview of all forms of tooth discolouration and the various techniques used to treat them will be covered. The techniques will be shown on special artificial teeth models for the ‘hands-on’ part of the course. Participants will be able to perform the various techniques of preparing and bonding direct veneers or Componeers as well as performing a complimentary procedure but with layering of enamel and dentine shades with the aid of a mock-up build up and silicone index. Characterisation techniques and age related effects will be taught for both systems.

Description: An initial presentation on periodontal aetiology and diagnosis, including discussion on the fundamental role of bacterial biofilms, is followed by groupwork (working in groups of 3 or 4) on cases with diagnostic dilemmas or problems. There is then discussion on risk factors, illustrated by further groupwork and discussion on more complex cases. At some stage during the day there will be an interactive exercise on the assessment of prognosis for individual teeth. As with all our courses the programme is designed to be highly flexible; most of the day is spent in discussion and the topics covered will vary, depending on the direction of the discussion.
