Description: Over the last 15 years we as a profession have acknowledged our part in safeguarding children at risk of child maltreatment. We now recognise dental neglect as a possible indicator of wider neglect and this is now the commonest reason for dentists to make referrals to children’s social care services. I will discuss how to assess dental neglect and its impact on children. I will describe the staged model we use to guide how we manage it, choosing examples from my own caseload but also relating the learning to orthodontics. And what of the child who misses their appointments? I will discuss when and why this matters and what can be done, including our use of a new ‘Was Not Brought’ pathway to provide a consistent approach.
