Description: Research shows that 7 percent of people with cleft are regularly being refused dental care. This evening will challenge the misconceptions that lead to inappropriate refusal of care and explore the role of the dental team in providing routine care alongside specialist cleft services. This free webinar is an opportunity to understand the oral health needs of people with cleft, including restorative and periodontal considerations. We hope this evening will empower dental teams to understand their role within the wider cleft care pathway, and be better equipped to deliver inclusive, patient-centred care without unnecessary referral. All team members are very welcome to attend. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion. This free webinar will be delivered by Racheal England from the Oral health foundation with support from Cleft Lip and Palate Action (CLAPA) and clinicians from the regional dental office.

Description: Please join us in Taunton, on Wednesday 17th June, when we will be welcoming Dr Archana Naik and the team from Dental Protection for our International Dental Graduate study day. As an International Graduate herself, Archana’s career in the UK began as a dental nurse and a hygienist before registering as a dentist. She has a MA in Dental Law and Ethics and is a Dentolegal Consultant at Dental Protection and has recently launched the New-to-the-UK practice hub to support dentists who qualified internationally in their transition to UK practice. We will spend the day discussing common dentolegal dilemmas using real life clinical scenarios. Archana will guide us through the importance of good communication, record keeping, complaints handling and consent. We will be looking at dental contracts, what are the risks and what to avoid when starting in a new practice. There will be the opportunity to meet peers, share experiences and build professional networks. Archana will help us recognise and identify strategies to reduce dentolegal risk and practice with greater confidence.

We are delighted to welcome Professor Peter Brennan, Consultant in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Captain Mike Davidson, BA Airbus A380 Captain, to guide us through the importance of effective communication, situational awareness, the effects of distraction and lowering authority gradients in the dental team, looking after oneself and the wider dental team to improve performance and patient safety. Prof. Brennan has over 90 publications on patient safety and is the proud author of an article in the prestigious Christmas BMJ exploring how Father Christmas works with human factors to ensure optimum efficiency! Malcolm will be leading an informal session for dentists, dental therapists, those preparing for ORE and anyone thinking of rejoining the register after a break. We understand this can feel daunting. This is a friendly, non-judgmental opportunity to practice cavity preps, handle materials, explore matrix systems and wrestle with rubber dam. We will be using plastic ‘teeth’ in phantom heads.
