Description: Child management is often challenging and with changes in how dentistry is operating at present, advice on how to manage children who may find coping with these changes difficult is more important than ever. The ability to manage child behaviour is the most important skill in paediatric dentistry and the cornerstone of the specialty. Despite the importance of this subject, it is often “taken for granted” in paediatric education. Although we all like to think of ourselves as experts in this field, it is now time to look at this complex controversial area again. Do we really need to change our approach? If so,why and how? How has Covid-19 impacted on our management? This session will challenge what we have all been taught in this field by examining changes in attitudes and approaches which are developing in society and therefore, the dental practice. Techniques for examining children will be reviewed and the role and ethics of clinical holding of our child patients will be explored. What are the factors which influence child behaviour in the dental practice– which of these can we influence as paediatric dentists? What about techniques and guidelines? The lecture will conclude by sharing with you Top Ten Tips for Child Behaviour Management.

This is an opportunity for the GDP team to update on patient safety and never events in Dentistry and develop HF skills including situational awareness, professional communication, brief/debrief and handover and put these skills into practice in teams on desk top flight simulators, a 737 simulator and within a plane fuselage under the expert tutelage of medical and aviation HF experts.
