Description: The initial presentation will set the scene and examine the development of an evidence-based approach. The second presentation will cover the principles of clinical trials and systematic reviews and explain some basic statistical methods and terminology. Two practical exercises on critical reading involving group work on papers will be sent to delegates before the course; guidance sheets will accompany the papers to help identify key points. Delegates will find it helpful to read “Bad Science” by Ben Goldacre prior to attending the course. Methods of data gathering will also be examined, usually with input from the Postgraduate Centre Librarian, by means of a practical online exercise searching medicine and other medical research databases.
