DescriptionThe course reviews the core subjects recommended for continuing training and education (as contained within para A 3.7 of the NRPB " Guidance Notes for General Practitioners on the Safe Use of X-Ray Equipment " June 2001).
Additional informationThese include:

(a) the principles of radiation physics
(b) risks of ionising radiation
(c) radiation doses in dental radiography
(d) factors affecting doses in dental radiography
(e) the principles of radiation protection
(f) statutory requirements
(g) selection criteria
(h) quality assurance.

This is a "CORE" subject. The GDC recommends registrants complete 5 hours verifiable CPD activity in "Radiography and Radiation Protection” within each 5 year CPD cycle.

The course also provides delegates with supporting evidence required for CQC Outcomes 4, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16 and 21.


The course is intended for Dentists, Qualified Dental Nurses who have obtained a Certificate in Dental Radiography and Hygienists and Therapists who have completed the Radiography component in basic training or who have completed the Certificate in Dental Radiography.

Ian Hamilton is a dentist with a background in radiation protection who, after gaining his MSc in Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology from King’s College, London, was appointed as the Subject Matter Expert for the Defence Dental Services. He teaches at undergraduate and postgraduate level across England and Scotland and has presented at International Conferences in Budapest (2009) and Hiroshima (2011). Course feedback consistently rates mandatory ionising radiation and Core of Knowledge training delivered by Ian as being lively, entertaining and extremely informative.

  1. Understand what statutory legislation is applicable to Dental Radiology/Radiography (IRR 99, IR(ME)R 2000
  2. Revise the nature of and specific hazards associated with ionising radiation in order that all members of the Dental Team understand the need to protect both themselves and their patients
  3. Understand the principles of Radiation Protection and how these are translated into practice
  4. Discuss the requirement for a Quality Assurance programme
