The course will be led by Mike Gregory who qualified as a dental technician prior to becoming a dentist. He has lectured since 1993 to undergraduates at Bristol Dental Hospital. In addition, he lectures post-graduate students on the topic and is part of a John Beresford study group. Participants are encouraged to contact Katherine Sugg (Katherine.sugg@hee.nhs.uk) with any areas that they would especially like covered. This allows the course to be tailored to the particular audience on the day.

Description: Rick Kerr (Senior Surgeon) and the team from Exeter, will be joining us virtually for a unique opportunity to offer help to those of us that find minor oral surgery challenging. This is the first of a two part course, for no more than twelve dentists. This small group will enable the learning needs of all participants to be addressed. Rick is happy to look at radiographs and discuss cases with participants. Over the two sessions we will be considering what is appropriate in general practice, important patient and medical factors, practical challenges, key instruments and the principles of sectioning teeth, elevating roots and when and how to raise a flap. COVID has changed practice for all of us, where triage prioritises face to face care for dental emergencies. For some of us, this has been challenging especially for those of us with limited clinical experience.

Description: this course aims to help us understand how pressures can affect the way we work as a team. An immersive study day to familiarise members of the dental team with human factors relevant to their clinical practice utilising dental, medical and aviation expertise. This is an opportunity for the GDP team to update on patient safety and never events in Dentistry and develop HF skills including situational awareness, professional communication, brief/debrief and handover and put these skills into practice in teams on desk top flight simulators, a 737 simulator and within a plane fuselage under the expert tutelage of medical and aviation HF experts. Description: Please join us for a free evening of CPD. It is often considered that the dentist and dental team should be infallible. In a blame culture it can be suggested that because we deal with the most intimate aspects of human life and are given great responsibility in patient care, we should not make errors, and if we do we must be accountable and punished. However, if as a profession we shift our thinking about error to a more positive, constructive approach that is centred around analysing why errors happen, we can then accept our human fallibility and design systems and protocols to prevent errors from occurring. Rupert Hoppen Brouwers (Senior Dento-legal Adviser for DDU) will discuss the prevalence and significance of errors in dentistry with particular reference to wrong tooth extraction, and will offer advice on how we can minimise errors within our own practice teams.
