Emergency Drugs - The Role of the Dental Team (SW25-10-14-01)

All members of the dental team are encouraged to attend, including those with a managerial role.

All members of the dental team including those with responsible for managing and planning primary care dental services. 

State the General Dental Council (GDC) and Care Quality Commission (CQC) requirements in relation to the training and medical emergency equipment and drugs  that should be in place in all primary dental care settings, define the drugs, there purpose and who may administer them. Should an emergency arise. 

Explain how schedule 17 and 19 of the Human Medicines Regulations apply to the administration of "medicines" by the dental team if a medical emergency occurs.

•Define the emergency drugs that should be in place and the legal requirements for their use if administered by members of the dental team

•Define the need for a patient specific directive (PSD) in relation to the use of buccal midazolam and when a PSD may not be required

Define the requirement for a patient group directive in order that salbutamol may be used in an emergency especially by dental hygienists and dental therapists

Discuss the indications for the use of each of the 7 medications and one non medicine that should be available in primary dental care is being delivered as defined by the Care Quality Commission.

Outline the administration of each medication

Define the CQC requirements in relation to medical emergencies drugs and equipment if providing care in a domiciliary setting, e.g. a care home or an individual's home.

Following the session all members of the dental team, should have a better understanding of the legislation into what emergency drugs are required to be in place where primary dental care is delivered.  State the conditions and what emergency drug is used to treat the condition. Define who may administer the emergency drug.
