Lecturer profileBernard Speculand was until February 2015 a Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon at University Hospital Birmingham, and now continues as Locum Consultant there following his retirement from full-time practice. He trained in Bristol, Bath and Adelaide before being appointed as Consultant in Birmingham in 1985. He is also Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer to the University of Birmingham and teaches at Birmingham Dental School.

His current interests are jaw deformity surgery (orthognathic surgery), salivary gland surgery, dental implant surgery, facial pain and temporo-mandibular joint problems. He undertakes major TMJ surgery including total joint replacement and has presented and lectured nationally and internationally about this. He was an elected Board Member, Vice Dean and examiner for the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has served on and chaired the BDA’s Central Committee for Hospital Dental Services.

He has over 35 peer reviewed publications and is an editorial referee for the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is a founder member and Past President of the Birmingham Medico-Legal Society.

He is an experienced medico-legal reporter with over 25 years experience and currently produces approximately 80 reports per year, the majority of which are as single joint expert. He also reports on a Claimant only and a Defendant only basis. He is listed on the Register of Expert Witnesses and is a member of the Society of Expert Witnesses. He is also an Expert, Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL).
