DescriptionNHS South-West Managed Clinical Network for Urgent Care Dentistry invites you to a FREE interactive evening event to discuss the management and treatment of urgent and emergency care patients with the focus on managing expectations of patients not known to the practice or the performer. The session will update knowledge of dental anxiety and how anxiety affects both clinical teams and service users and will also describe how to use simple techniques to improve experiences and outcomes. The use of low-dose benzodiazepines in helping anxious patients cope with urgent dental care and how these can be safely prescribed by dental practitioners will also be covered.
Additional information

This interactive session will focus on managing the behaviours and expectations of patients that are presenting who are in pain and may be highly anxious.


The session will be run by clinicians who have experience of managing:

  • Patient anxiety
  • Aggressive/challenging patients
  • Unrealistic expectations i.e. expecting the unnecessary prescribing of antibiotics

This event is aimed at the whole Oral health team, including front line staff who have initial contact with patients i.e. reception staff

Aims

This event is an opportunity for the oral healthcare team to engage with the Managed Clinical Network for Urgent Care Network and learn some coping mechanisms to best support the care of patients who may not be known to you or your practice who are undergoing emergency or urgent care treatment.

Objectives

By the end of this webinar participants will be able to:

  1. describe tools to support the development of effective communication with patients who may display, anxiety, high expectations or challenging behaviours
  2. implement simple strategies to decrease anxiety in people attending urgent dental care services
  3. prescribe suitable anxiolytics for some service users.
Learning outcomes

By the end of this session participants should be able to;

  • demonstrate knowledge and skills in maintaining patient confidence in themselves and the dental team despite patient anxieties and/or challenging behaviour.
  • improve outcomes for patients and clinical teams delivering urgent dental care.
