DescriptionProfessor StJohn Crean will take us through the presentation of oral and systemic disease we could come across in our daily practice. He will cover oral cancer screening and commonly occurring oral medicine problems and outline the management options and likely outcomes of treatment, as well as highlighting the signs of systemic disease that may present in the oro-facial region.

Professor StJohn Crean BDS MBBS FDSRCS FFGDP(UK) FRCS FRCS(OMFS) PHD has a vast amount of experience and knowledge own this field as a Consultant in Oral and and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as being involved in undergraduate and postgraduate education, most recently as Executive Dean of Faculty of Clinical and Biomedical Sciences at University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). We are very fortunate he has agreed to come to speak to us on oral medicine, one of the GDC core topics.

Aims

· Provide an overview of oral cavity in terms of presentation of diseases both oral and systemic


· To suggest the oral examinations play a wider role in general health assessment

Objectives

· To review the normal oral gross and histological features of relevance to the functionality of the oral cavity

· To review the common oral medicine conditions, their long term outcomes and management options

· To explore the challenge of oral cancer screening in primary care

· To link the complexity of the 21stcentury complex synthetic world and the response of the immune system within

   the oral cavity

· To highlight systemic disease signs presenting in the oro/facial region allowing risk assessment of their significance

Learning outcomes

· To be able to identify normal and abnormal oral cavity anatomy, signs and symptoms

· To be able to ensure each dental patient is alerted to the risk factors for oral cancer and to be able to safely screen

  for early features

· To work with other professionals within managed clinical networks to respond to wider oral health challenges

· To be able to provide management advice on systemic diseases within a dental setting.
