Description: Consent and ethics have been seen by some clinicians as just the boring paperwork that gets in the way of finishing the appointment on time. There can be a lot of confusion about the consent process, who can consent to treatment, and how to handle cases where there may be difficulties in obtaining consent. But lack of proper consent, ignorance of equality and diversity issues, and poor communication are leading to an increasing number of cases where the best interests of the patient are not being put first. This lecture will look at the practical issues of consent, how it is essential for the patient and the dentist, your legal and moral obligations, and how to avoid seeing these as burdens or obstacles. There will be an update on ethical practice, and the fundamental issues of equality and diversity within clinical practice: as well as the ethical side of consent, honest discussion with the patient, and conscientious treatment planning, leading to fair and equitable treatment for all. Remember: correct consent and ethical can prevent things going wrong, and having a unhappy patient with a serious complaint against the dentist or the practice.
