Lecturer nameMrs Julie Richards
Lecturer profileI first Qualified as a general nurse and then as a mental health nurse and continued nursing between my other roles until 2000.
My other roles have been many and varied and I have often been lucky enough to be in at the beginning of a new venture. I worked as a Medical auditor when it was first identified as a job and I was a coordinator for an Advocacy service where I set up and ran citizen advocacy, group advocacy and supported self-advocacy for people with learning disabilities and mental health problems, when this type of service was in its infancy. I was also one of the first practice nurses in my local area whilst combining the role with that of practice manager. I took a secondment as a coordinator, moving people from a large hospital for those with learning disabilities, into the community at a time when community living was blossoming. Prior to joining the CQC 8 years ago I worked in the out of hours services as a deputy director for governance where we had GP services and a mobile dental unit and I specialised in setting up and monitoring new services. Since working at the CQC I have been with the oral health team since it became a team in in its own right which, has given us the opportunity to be hands on in developing the team and methodology. I am a qualified ISO 9001 auditor and have written systems and processes for quality audits. As a disabled person I have an understanding of how difficult a place the world can be to negotiate at times and I am passionate about sharing my story and the story of my autistic grandson to help others understand the challenges and improve services for all users.
