Aims
  • To improve the knowledge and confidence of trainees to be able to differentiate and manage benign, potentially malignant and malignant conditions represented by white patches arising within the oral cavity
  • To improve the knowledge and confidence of trainees to be able to differentiate and manage benign, potentially malignant and malignant conditions represented by red patches arising within the oral cavity
  • To improve the knowledge and confidence of trainees to be able to differentiate and manage benign, potentially malignant and malignant oral conditions represented by oral ulceration arising within the oral cavity
  • To improve the knowledge and confidence of trainees to be able to recognise and manage oral epithelial dysplasia arising within the oral cavity
Objectives
  • Describe the different types of white patches in the oral cavity
  • Formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis for white/red patches of the oral cavity 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the causes of oral white/red patches and features that warrant further investigation.
  • Identify the steps involved in diagnosing white/red patches  Outline the general management principles for white/red patches
  • Describe patient- and lesion- related factors that increase the risk of malignant transformation of oral potentially malignant white patches
  • Counsel patients on modifiable risk factors and advocate preventive measures
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of when onward referral may be necessary
