| Description | This course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an Introduction to primary care NHS dentistry – essential for dentists undertaking Performers List Validation by Equivalence (PLVE). This course is also suitable for other dentists who are new to the NHS, dentists returning to NHS practice, and any dental professional interested in learning more about the featured topics. |

| Aims | Overall aims: 1. To improve the predictability of dento-alveolar surgery in general dental practice. 2. To improve the patient experience. Specific aims: 1. To provide practitioners with an opportunity to practice clinical skills. 2. To increase practitioners’ skills in dento-alveolar surgery. 3. To increase practitioners’ confidence. 4. To reduce unnecessary referrals to secondary care. |
| Objectives | 1. To provide training in the theory and practice of minor oral surgery for the GDP, including patient selection, care planning and instrument set-up. 2. To demonstrate a range of minor oral surgery procedures that can be safely undertaken in general practice so as to aid surgical removal of fractured teeth, surgical removal of uncomplicated third molars, and root removal. 3. To review contemporary dental anaesthesia. 4. To discuss selection criteria for dento-alveolar referral to secondary care. 5. To discuss the management of pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative complications associated with dento-alveolar surgery. |
| Learning outcomes | Following this course learners should be able to: 1. Describe the fundamental principles of care planning and patient management for safe and effective hard and soft tissue surgery in general dental practice. 2. Demonstrate competence in performing dento-alveolar surgery using Oral Surgery Jaw Models. 3. Provide safe and effective local anaesthesia when performing dento-alveolar surgery. 4. Effectively manage common minor oral surgical procedures, so as to reduce referrals to secondary care. 5. Outline strategies for meeting patient expectations and managing the risk of complications, so as to improve the predictability of dento-alveolar surgery in general dental practice. |
