Aims

The overall aim of this hands-on workshop:

To improve management of the grossly carious primary dentition in primary care.

Specific aims:

1. To increase practitioners’ skills and confidence.

2. To improve the patient experience for children.

3. To reduce unnecessary paediatric referrals to secondary care.

Objectives

1. To provide the evidence base underpinning the management of grossly carious primary molars.

2. To expose participants to hands-on training in the techniques for undertaking primary pulp therapy.

3. To expose participants to hands-on training in the techniques for providing extra-coronal restorations to primary molars.

4. To outline effective strategies for managing children in the dental setting and promote confidence of practitioners.

Learning outcomes

Following this course learners should be able to:

1. Apply the appropriate evidence so as to manage advanced caries in children with confidence.

2. Effectively carry out the steps involved in primary pulp therapy so as to save the grossly carious primary molar and reduce paediatric referrals to secondary care.

3. Effectively restore primary molars with stainless steel crowns so as to save the grossly carious primary molar and reduce paediatric referrals to secondary care.

4. Instil a positive dental attitude by effectively and efficiently performing treatment for a child.
