Academic posts as Clinical research Assistant (UMDS), Lecturer (University of Newcastle upon Tyne); Senior Lecturer (UWCM and University of Glasgow) preceded the current appointment to the University of Bristol in 2011. I am an Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry (first appointed in Cardiff in October 1998).

Experience relevant to the topic:

I have been responsible for the delivery of education in conscious sedation for undergraduate and postgraduate dental students and dental nurses since 1991 initially in Newcastle and then in Cardiff, Glasgow and now in Bristol. As the Honorary Consultant I run the clinical sedation service within the Bristol Dental Hospital, and am also on the GDC Specialist list in Special Care Dentistry. I have published extensively in the field of sedation including the most widely recommended UK textbook in the field, and in the area of toothwear. I have also been involved in the production of the last five guidance documents in the field of conscious sedation in the UK, including chairing the SDCEP Guidance Development Group.

I have been involved in the teaching of conscious sedation in dentistry since 1991, establishing programmes of undergraduate education in four dental schools in the UK. Ie was also responsible for the development of the first Diploma qualification in conscious sedation in the UK, as well as the first UK course teaching inhalation sedation to Dental Hygienists and Therapists.

Having practised General Anaesthesia in the past I was also involved in the Development of the Certificate in Dental Anaesthetic Nursing that was established by the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses.

I am the only person to have been President / Chairman of the three UK based sedation specialist societies (Association of Dental Anaesthetists, Dental Sedation Teachers Group and Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry), as well as the only person to have been elected to serve a second term as President of the European Federation for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry.
