SubjectAnxiety control and sedation
DescriptionPlease join us for an interactive and practical update day on IV sedation, cannulation and venepuncture. The course is suitable for all members of the team providing sedation as part of the requirements for the recommended 12 hours of sedation-related verifiable CPD in each 5 year cycle. Theory sessions will cover patient assessment, safety and cannulation tips and tricks and how to manage those difficult situations. Hands on activities will include cannulation practice on training arms then an opportunity to practice on each other in a clinical setting. Chris Bell and Tim Harris have a wealth of experience in dental IV sedation and share their top tips in a relaxed atmosphere. This will be a relatively small group.
Additional information

This course is open to all who have previous experience with IV sedation – this is not a sedation qualification course but update.

Please bring safety glasses for the clinical activity and scrub tops to wear with suitable lower garments and footwear for a clinical environment.

Standard masks, aprons and powder-free nitrile gloves will be provided but if you require non-standard items please bring your own.

Circus Dental are located in the centre of Bath with a number of car parks close by. The nearest car parking is on-street and tickets can be purchased from on-street parking meters.The closest car parks are:


Charlotte Street (5 minute walk). BA1 2NE.

The Podium (8 minute walk). BA1 5NL. Broad Street (6 minute walk).

BA1 5LW. Walcot Street (7 minute walk). BA1 5LH.

Park and Ride is available from Landsdown and stops in Milsom Street. Visit Travelwest park and ride.

​There is no catering available but there are shops within walking distance, alternatively please bring your own food.

Aims

The aim of this course is to support participants in providing IV sedation and effective and predictable cannulation in a general practice or secondary care setting


Objectives

By the end of this course participants should be able to:


  1. Explain the current best-practice guidance and where to find it
  2. Describe the anatomy for effective cannulation.
  3. Explain the best methods for patient preparation.
  4. Describe some practical tips to help improve the predictability of cannulation.
  5. Recognise common pitfalls and complications of cannulation.
  6. Undertake venepuncture and cannulation on each other and manikins in a clinical setting
  7. Appreciate emergencies encountered in sedation practice and how to manage them
  8. Describe how the dental team contributes to sedation patient care and the importance of team working
Learning outcomes

By the end of the session the participants will have the knowledge, skills and confidence to improve practical skills for their cannulation technique and updated on the current best practice for safe provision of IV sedation.
