Join Fiona Sandom, Dental Therapist, and Christine Randall, lead pharmacist with the Specialist Pharmacy Service for the Dental Medicines Advice Service, to guide us through the recent changes to the Human Medicines Regulations regarding the supply and administration of specific medicines by dental hygienists and therapists.

Aims

To equip dental hygienists and dental therapists with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and effectively administer and supply specific medicines within the legal framework of Human Medicines Regulations.


Objectives

By the end of the session, delegates shouldbe able to:


1. Explain the legal framework of the Human Medicines Regulations and its relevance to the practice of dental hygiene and dental therapy

2. Identify the legal and professional boundaries regarding administration and supply of specific medicine within dental clincal practice

3. Conduct comprehensive patient assessment to determine the need for specific medicines, considering patient history, current medications and potential allergies

4. Effectively communicate with patients to obtain informed consent, ensuring patients understand the purpose, benefits and any risks involved in the administration and supply of medicines provided.

5. Monitor patients for adverse reactions and manage any complications effectively, incuding appropriate documentation and aftercare advice

6. Identify, document and report adverse drug reactions promptly and appropriately following established protocols

7. Use reflective practice to evaluate personal performance and identify areas of improvement in the safe administration and supply of specific medicines
