Aims

The course is an overview of current best-practice for conscious sedation in dentistry

Objectives

· Appreciate the development of sedation in dentistry and healthcare

· Display awareness of current best-practice guidance and where to find it

· Understand which patients will benefit from treatment under conscious sedation

· Understand anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pharmacokinetics of sedation practice / techniques

· Identify suitable cases to treat in primary care

· Describe how the dental team contributes to sedation patient care and the importance of team working

· Appreciate emergencies encountered in sedation practice and how to manage them

Learning outcomes

Be aware of current best-practice for the provision of sedation in dentistry. Understand where to find this evidence and how to access suitable training (theoretical & practical) to allow independent practice. Be aware of medical co-morbidities and how these may impact on sedation provision.
