Short Resume of Career to Date:
Judy qualified as a Dental Hygienist in the early nineties spending her early career in the Royal Air Force, gaining experience in the military practice setting in the UK, Germany and Nepal. In addition Judy worked in the hospital setting receiving a commendation for working with special care and cancer patients. Judy has a long standing commitment to dental education both as a tutor dental hygienist in the RAF and for 12 years at Bristol Dental Hospital. Judy, for many years was responsible for the curriculum development of the BDS Undergraduate program in Bristol including regulation for both the BDS and Dental Hygiene programs to ensure that they meet the requirements of the GDC document ‘Preparing for Practice’. Judy currently continues to be a tutor in Bristol, plans and coordinates delivery of training for TePe and until recently worked in general dental practice. She enjoys taking part and delivering oral health initiatives.
She is an active member for the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) at regional group level and is involved in peer review and eCPD independent review of BSDHT clinical journal submissions. She takes part in and supports worthy oral health education initiatives. In her spare time she enjoys spending time walking with her dog and enjoying her garden.
She believes that it is important as registrants to maintain clinical competency in the skills that we have been trained to do. It is essential that we communicate our Scope of Practice to not only the Dental Team we work with, but to the patients in our care and the general public. This ensures that all of our competency skills are utilised to provide the best possible treatment outcomes and experience for those patients in our care.

I have a wealth of clinical experience and enthusiasm for developing the role and scope of practice for the dental team and sharing best practice with health care professionals.

Lecturer profileJane is currently Clinical Lecturer Peninsula Dental School and has taught on the undergraduate dental and dental hygiene therapy courses at Peninsula Dental School since it opened over 10 years ago. Jane is module lead for the Inter-professional Education Module IPE3, where dental students work alongside other healthcare professionals to teach them about promoting and supporting oral health. She also teaches management of dental problems on the Remote Medicine Msc and provide training for the British Antarctic Survey Medical Unit.

Experience relevant to the topic:
Previous post as Community Dental Officer and in current post as StR in SCD: working with patients with complex medical and social needs requiring specialist and holistic dental treatment planning and management,- including management of elderly patients. Current committee member of the British Society for Gerodontology.

Born and raised in California and Texas Matthew completed his BSc in Chemistry in 2002 in Wisconsin with a plan to go on to study dentistry. A summer internship in the biochemistry labs at Rush Medical School, Chicago in 2001 led to an opportunity to emigrate to Cardiff University to work in the connective tissue biology labs on mechanisms of cartilage destruction in osteoarthritis. He then went on to study dentistry and completed his BDS at Peninsula Dental School in 2011. Post-graduation he undertook general professional training in Bristol with a year in dental practice, and SHO posts in OMFS at Frenchay and Southmead Hospitals. He then returned to the peninsula for a further 2 years as an OMFS SHO at Torbay Hospital followed by a year as a Specialty Doctor, and then onto a Specialist Training post in Oral Surgery in 2016 which he completed in 2019. After CCST Matthew spent over two years as a Specialty Doctor in OMFS before becoming the Clinical Lead for the Salaried Dental/Special Care Dental Service for Northern Devon in May 2021. He still maintains 1 day in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Torbay Hospital which includes 2nd on call cross-cover with Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.

Experience relevant to the topic:
After nearly 10 years in posts in District General Hospital Maxillofacial units with experience as first and 2nd on call Matthew has gained extensive experience in management of acute oro-facial swelling. In his new primary care post he also covers urgent care clinics for patients needing emergency dental care who do not have a regular dentist.

Manal is currently a Post-CCST registrar in Paediatric Dental with the South West Deanery at Bristol Dental Hospital. She graduated from Cardiff University in 2014 and completed her dental foundation training (DFT) in Port Talbot.

Prior to commencing her specialist training in Bristol, in September 2018, she has completed various Dental Core Trainee (DCT) posts in the primary, secondary and tertiary care settings. These include the community dental service in Swansea, Morriston Hospital, Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

Experience relevant to the topic:
- Oral health promotion
- Provision of comprehensive dental care for paediatric dental patients who are anxious and have complex medical, behavioural and dental needs under local anaesthesia, inhalation sedation and consultant led general anaesthetic lists at Bristol Dental Hospital and Bristol Children’s Hospital
