Short resume of career to date:
Sarah currently works as an Advisor for the Dental Defence Union. Until recently she worked for the Dental Academy Portsmouth University and was Clinical Director for 13 years. Whilst not a registered periodontal specialist, Sarah has taught Periodontology to undergraduate student dentists and Dental Care Professionals for the past 20 years, and spent 5 years working in the Department of Periodontology in Bristol Dental Hospital where she obtained her PhD. She has also undertaken a clinical attachment in the Department of Periodontology at Kings College London. In the past Sarah has been an External Adviser to the Cardiff University Programme Approval Panel for the BSc in Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene, was an Examiner for the English Statutory Board Examinations and has been a contributing author of the Bristol University Open Learning Degree module 9 “Oral Health and Disease”. Sarah also completed a 4 year post as External Examiner for the Hygiene Diploma at Bristol University from to 2017-2020.

Born and raised in California and Texas Matthew completed his BSc in Chemistry in 2002 in Wisconsin with a plan to go on to study dentistry. A summer internship in the biochemistry labs at Rush Medical School, Chicago in 2001 led to an opportunity to emigrate to Cardiff University to work in the connective tissue biology labs on mechanisms of cartilage destruction in osteoarthritis. He then went on to study dentistry and completed his BDS at Peninsula Dental School in 2011. Post-graduation he undertook general professional training in Bristol with a year in dental practice, and SHO posts in OMFS at Frenchay and Southmead Hospitals. He then returned to the peninsula for a further 2 years as an OMFS SHO at Torbay Hospital followed by a year as a Specialty Doctor, and then onto a Specialist Training post in Oral Surgery in 2016 which he completed in 2019. After CCST Matthew spent over two years as a Specialty Doctor in OMFS before becoming the Clinical Lead for the Salaried Dental/Special Care Dental Service for Northern Devon in May 2021. He still maintains 1 day in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Torbay Hospital which includes 2nd on call cross-cover with Derriford Hospital, Plymouth.

Experience relevant to the topic:
After nearly 10 years in posts in District General Hospital Maxillofacial units with experience as first and 2nd on call Matthew has gained extensive experience in management of acute oro-facial swelling. In his new primary care post he also covers urgent care clinics for patients needing emergency dental care who do not have a regular dentist.

Following undergraduate dental (Dundee) and medical (Bristol) degrees, Barry undertook training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Severn Deanery. He concurrently trained in research, undertaking a PhD in health services research and later being appointed as a National Institute for Health Research Clinical Lecturer. . Barry is Head of Bristol Dental School and work as a clinical academic holding a consultant post in oral and maxillofacial surgery in Bristol.

Experience relevant to the topic:
Barry regularly see patients referred in via the two week wait pathway with oral ulceration, and have experience of treating patients with ulceration of varying underlying causes, including malignancy.

Short resume of career to date:
Jessica completed her undergraduate at the University of Sheffield. She then completed her DCT1 in Community dentistry in Portsmouth and DCT2 in Dental Public Health and Special Care Dentistry Surrey. Jessica carried out her Speciality training in Special care at Bristol Dental Hospital, and then worked as a Specialist in Special care Dentistry for the Wiltshire Community Dental Service. Jessica is currently working as a Consultant in Special Care dentistry at Bristol Dental Hospital.

Jessica has previously published in the British Dental Journal and has been a speaker at national conferences such as the BSG and BGS.
