DescriptionOptimisation of NHS resources has never been more important. This course will help develop our understanding of how to make appropriate orthodontic referrals, including strategies to ensure you refer the right patient at the right time to the right provider. There will be opportunities to practice IOTN assessment using digitised study models and signposting to further resources that can be used chairside. The session is suitable for all interested members of the dental team and will help us to explain the referral criteria and process to our patients.

Aims

The aim of this session is to increase confidence in referring the right patient at the right time for orthodontics. 

Objectives

Bt the end of this session participants will have be able:

  • to understand why an assessment of the developing dentition is important
  • to have a structure on which to base a systematic assessment of the developing occlusion
  • to understand the relevance of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN)
  • to understand when, how and to whom to refer
Learning outcomes

By the end of this session participants should:

  • have increased confidence in assessing patients malocclusion,
  • know the correct timing to refer for certain situations
  • be able to facilitate appropriate patients to access orthodontic services
  • have more confidence in discussing the referral process with patients and their families
