Aims

To provide participants with the knowledge base and practical skills to be able to plan and provide treatment for children and young people with dental injuries.

Objectives
  • Describe the restraints placed on history-taking by distraught, injured children and their families, whilst having regard for legal requirements; to review those legal requirements and approaches to their fulfillment.
  • List the contents of a history to be taken in the case of a child with a dental injury; to include where, when, and how the injury occurred.
  • Understand the tetrad of investigations - observation, palpation, sensitivity testing and radiography - and using the principles of healing and repair for the tissues involved - to determine the status of injured teeth; interpret those findings and plan care on the basis of them.
  • Carry out in phantom the placement of splints, the replacement of tooth fragments and the placement of medicaments in open rooted teeth.
