DescriptionSepsis claims an estimated 48,000 lives per year in the UK (UK Sepsis Trust). Sepsis following a dental condition or treatment is rare but can occur if patients are not managed appropriately. Anna Dargue (Associate Specialist in Oral Surgery at Bristol Dental Hospital) will be joining us to ensure we are all aware of the signs, symptoms and management of sepsis and acute swellings of the head and neck.

Aims

Revise the management of dental patients who present with acute oro-facial swellings and/or sepsis

Objectives
  • Identify oro-facial and dental pathology that can cause acute swelling of the face and neck
  • Define sepsis and identify markers of sepsis
  • Revise appropriate management of patients with acute swelling of the face and neck and sepsis

Dental Teams will be able to identify and appropriately manage sepsis and life threatening acute swellings presenting in general dental practice.
