DescriptionDuring this virtual session, the Oral Surgery team from Exeter (Alex Adams, Norma Rogerson and Richard Kerr) will be exploring the current concepts and good practice with respect to third molar assessment and subsequent management, treatment or referral. This will include case treatment studies and discussion of appropriate procedures depending on the setting, including those appropriate for the general practice team or cases best referred to specialist care. This course is suitable for the general practitioner wishing to extend their knowledge on assessment and initial treatment planning but is not a substitute for supervised or mentored surgical training.

This course will be aimed at dentists, however any clinicians with an interest in this subject are very welcome to attend.

Aims

To explore common challenges that the general dentist may encounter with wisdom teeth, considering current practice and guidance.

Objectives

- Review signs and symptoms of a problematic wisdom tooth

- Examine current guidance pertaining to assessment and treatment of wisdom teeth

- Discuss best practice for consent with respect to wisdom teeth

- Assess surgical difficulty of upper and lower third molars from clinical and radiographic standpoints, including with Cone Beam CT

- Identify which treatment is appropriate for your setting

- Be aware of essential surgical kit and basic surgical techniques relevant to wisdom teeth

Following this course, participants will be more confident in managing third molars in practice.
