Aims

The course is aimed to help all members of the dental team to gain insight into dementia and its impact on the delivery of dental treatment.

Objectives

To support dental registrants to provide preventative oral healthcare and dental treatment that meets the needs of an individual living with dementia, by covering:


  • A brief overview of what dementia is and its prevalence
  • Risk factors and prevention
  • The importance of good oral health
  • The different types of dementia and their potential impact on dental treatment including the viewpoint of someone living with dementia
  • Tips on how to treat people living with dementia including modification of the practice environment and patient management. This will include ways to communicate, treatment planning, prevention and making your practice more dementia friendly
  • Further training and resources
Learning outcomes

By the end of the training participants should be able to:


  • Demonstrate recognition of the needs of older people including those living with dementia so as to provide safe, dignified and compassionate care.
  • Make adjustments to practice to support older people including those living with dementia by assisting the development of supportive care environments.
