DescriptionThis short course looks at what dementia is and considers the modifications needed in the dental environment to aid the treatment of patients affected by dementia, their families and carers. GDC development outcomes C, D.

Katy Kerr BDS DDPH RCS (Eng) PGCertCE. Katy currently chairs the Dementia Friendly Dentistry Group and represents dentistry. She is passionate about improving access for people with dementia to visit the dentist and is working to support the establishment of dementia friendly dental care environments. She was the project lead for the dementia awareness film, “The Appointment” now hosted on the national NHSE WT&E website as part of dementia training for all health professionals.


This webinar is suitable for entire dental team, it will be delivered via MS Teams. Aims

The overall aim is aligned with Government health policy that enables older people to remain independent for longer by providing preventative oral healthcare and access to treatment that is appropriate for the individual.

Objectives
  • Explain what is meant by the term dementia and why early diagnosis is important to the individual, families and society.
  • Discuss The Dementia Care Pathway
  • Explain the potential impact on dental treatment
  • Identify and discuss help and tips on how to treat people living with dementia including modification of the practice environment and patient management.
Learning outcomes

By the end of the training participants should be able to:


  • Demonstrate recognition of the needs of older people including those living with dementia so as to provide safe, dignified and compassionate care.
  • Make adjustments to practice to support older people including those living with dementia by assisting the development of supportive care environments.
