DescriptionRick Kerr (Senior Surgeon) and the team from Exeter, will be joining us virtually for a unique opportunity to offer help to those of us that find dental extractions challenging. This is the first of a two part course. This small group will enable the learning needs of all participants to be addressed. Rick is happy to look at radiographs and discuss cases with participants. Over the two sessions we will be considering what is appropriate in general practice, important patient and medical factors, practical challenges, key instruments and the principles of sectioning teeth, elevating roots and when and how to raise a flap. COVID has changed practice for all of us, where triage prioritises face to face care for dental emergencies. For some of us, this has been challenging especially for those of us with limited clinical experience.
Additional information

All dentists at any stage of their career are very welcome.  This course is especially suitable for those of us who find taking out teeth worrying or stressful, or would just like to be more confident.  Suitable for FD dentists, those recently completing their foundation year and International Dental Graduates working toward their Performer Number.

This course is not suitable for those people wishing to extend their skills.

An invitation for MS Teams will be sent to delegates prior to the event.  Please do not share this with anyone else.  You will need to ensure that you are able to use your camera and microphone to fully participate in this session.

Aims

Session 1 : To revise the principles of assessing patients for dental extractions and increase confidence in planning simple and surgical tooth extractions

Session 2: To revise the practicalities of oral surgery and increase confidence in carrying out simple and surgical tooth extractions

Objectives

Session 1:

  • Discuss important patient and medical factors when planning simple and surgical extractions
  • Consider MRIONJ and anticoagulated patients
  • Identify patients who may benefit from sedation/general anaesthetic
  • Determine which tooth extraction cases may be treated in practice or are best referred elsewhere

Session 2:

  • Describe common practical challenges of providing oral surgery
  • List key instruments used in oral surgery
  • Offer patients better reassurance and post-procedure advice
  • Understand when and how to raise a flap
  • Explain the principles of sectioning teeth and elevating roots
  • Discuss suturing basic techniques and kit
Learning outcomes

Following this course, dentists will be more confident in approaching simple and surgical extractions in practice.
