Description | We are delighted to welcome Professor Iain Chapple, renowned Professor of Periodontology, to the South West to help the dental team effectively diagnose, classify and manage periodontal disease and discuss the links between periodontitis and systemic health. He will be joined by Mike Wheeler, NHS England's Programme Manager for Dental Apprenticeships. Prof. Chapple and Mr Wheeler will examine the current evidence base and explore how the whole dental team can work together to achieve improved periodontal, and therefore systemic, health for their patients. |

Aims | - To demonstrate the economic and societal burden of periodontitis
- To guide the dental team through periodontal classification, diagnosis and evidence based therapy.
- To summarise the current state of knowledge on periodontal-systemic connections according to the current evidence base.
- To demonstrate how to utilise the wider dental team in the management and prevention of periodontitis.

Objectives | - To understand how to rapidly and simply classify periodontitis and arrive at a diagnosis.
- To understand S3-level clinical guidelines and how they work and can be applied in the NHS.
- To visualise the impact of periodontitis as a chronic non-communicable disease (NCD) and the role of the dental team in managing NCDs.
- To glimpse into the future role of the dental team in medical management of their patients who may have systemic NCDs.
- To examine how the unique skill sets of the wider dental team can be used to manage periodontitis.
- To recognise further training opportunities for members of the dental team that could be used to develop skills to help manage periodontitis.

Learning outcomes | After this course, delegates will be able to: - Appreciate the burden of periodontitis on humankind
- Learn how to undertake periodontal treatment in the NHS system
- Understand the impact of severe periodontitis upon life expectancy.
- Be able to confidently discuss and explain to patients the impact of oral health upon general health without alarming them.
- To understand how periodontitis may be causally involved in systemic NCDs of ageing.
- Appreciate how inflammation in the periodontal tissues may be a trigger for autoimmunity in rheumatoid arthritis.
- Feel confident to effectively and efficiently utilise the wider dental team in the management and prevention of periodontitis.
