SubjectMiscellaneous
DescriptionDental teams frequently support patients with a history of Traumatic Life Events (TLEs) and this significantly increases when working with inclusion groups. This session is an exciting opportunity to develop greater knowledge in the area of trauma. The impact upon the brain, body, and mouth will be considered, alongside understanding how to adapt the dental setting to the needs of traumatised patients, using trauma informed approaches.
Additional information

Patients experiencing TLEs are more likely to:

§ Engage in poorer health behaviours

§ Display increased dental fear and anxiety

§ Avoid engagement with routine care

Evidence shows that a patient’s dentalcare experiences may echo their TLEs, and patients can be retraumatised unwittingly by dental treatment. It is therefore essential that dental teams are trauma informed and have the skills to interact appropriately with patients. There is a need to create appropriate environments and understand the pivotal role of the dental team in establishing positive interpersonal relationships between themselves and individuals from inclusion groups.
