Until recently Sarah worked at the Dental Academy at Portsmouth University as a Dental Tutor with an interest in Periodontology. She now works as an Adviser for  the Dental Defence Union. Whilst not a registered periodontal specialist, Sarah has taught Periodontology to undergraduate student dentists and Dental Care Professionals for the past 20 years, and spent 5 years working in the Department of Periodontology in Bristol Dental Hospital where she obtained her PhD. She has also undertaken a clinical attachment in the Department of Periodontology at Kings College London. In the past Sarah has been an External Adviser to the Cardiff University Programme Approval Panel for the BSc in Dental Therapy and Dental Hygiene, was an Examiner for the English Statutory Board Examinations and has been a contributing author of the Bristol University Open Learning Degree module 9 “Oral Health and Disease”. Sarah also completed a 4 year post as External Examiner for the Hygiene Diploma at Bristol University from to 2017-2020.

To update periodontal knowledge including diagnosis and classification of periodontal disease

To understand how to manage periodontal patients in general dental practice including when to refer

Objectives

1.to provide training in screening and assessment for periodontal disease.

2.to explain contemporary nonsurgical periodontal disease management.

3. To discuss periodontal treatment outcomes and interim care management programmes for patients.

4. To discuss treatment approaches and selection criteria for referral.

5. To outline a multidisciplinary approach to comprehensive person centred care when managing patients with periodontal disease.

Learning outcomes

To have increased confidence to manage patients presenting with periodontal disease.
