DescriptionHEE SW are delighted to invite you to join us in welcoming Linda Parrott, experienced general dental practitioner, for this one day workshop designed to give Dental Hygienists, Dental Therapists and Clinical Dental Technicians the confidence, knowledge and skills to prescribe radiographs without referral from a dentist, in line with the GDC's Scope of Practice guidance.
Additional information

This course will be particularly useful for those working within the NHS and preparing for the new NHS contract.

Participants will be invited to complete a log of radiographs taken after the course which Linda will kindly assess and provide feedback for, within a mutually agreed timeframe.

Aims

The workshop will develop participants knowledge of normal anatomy on intraoral radiographs, knowledge of selection criteria and audit, radiation protection, legislaton and justification. It aims to increase confidence and ability to prescribe, take and interpret dental radiographs.


Objectives

· Refresh knowledge of normal anatomy on intraoral radiographs

· Develop existing working knowledge of selection criteria and audit

· Demonstrate an understanding of radiation physics, protections, and dose optimisation

· Demonstrate an understanding of key legislation related to dental radiography

· State the clinical justification for taking a radiograph and how this is recorded

· Define how to actually prescribe and take radiographs

· Demonstrate how to interpret radiographs and know the pitfalls of interpretation

· Define when to refer from the interpretation of a radiograph

Learning outcomes

· Understand the basic physics associated with dental radiographs, radiation protection guidance and dose optimisation

· Understand the relevant legislation in relation to the primary dental care setting

· State how to prescribe and record the radiograph justification

· Undertake the interpretation of routine primary care radiographs and understand pitfalls

· Demonstrate an understanding of when to refer after interpreting a radiograph
