Description | Treating patients with an exaggerated gag reflex is distressing, for the patient and the operator. It may result in the patient avoiding attending for dental treatment. We categorise the exaggerated gag reflex as having either a somatic or psychological cause. This course will examine the reasons the gag reflex becomes exaggerated and how we can help patients cope with it. | ||

Objectives | List the causes of an exaggerated gag reflex Describe some of the simple and complex techniques used to control the exaggerated gag reflex such as acupuncture, acupressure, hypnosis, distraction Discuss ways of coping with patients who have exaggerated gag reflex Review evidence for managing gag reflex | ||
