DescriptionProf Ama Johal is a leader in the field of Dental Sleep Medicine and will give an overview of the current understanding of the spectrum of sleep-related breathing disorders. The course will include their prevalence, aetiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment options. It will also highlight the role of the dental profession in the management of sleep-disordered breathing in adults. Professor Ama Johal, as well as being an orthodontist, has 25 years of clinical and research experience in Dental Sleep Medicine gaining a PhD in the subject in 2005. He is currently Vice President of the British Society of Dental Sleep Medicine

Aims

The aim of this course is to  explore the role of the dentist in the management of sleep-disordered breathing in adults.


Objectives

The objectives of this course are to provide:

1. An overview of our current understanding of sleep-related breathing disorders and the importance of the dental profession, highlighting the aetiology for collapse of the upper airway, prevalence, clinical features and management approaches.


2. A current evidence-based perspective on the role of mandibular advancement appliances in the management of sleep-related breathing disorders.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this courses delegates will have:

1. An understanding of the spectrum of sleep-related breathing disorders, including their prevalence, aetiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment options 



2. An understanding of the role of mandibular advancement appliances in the management of sleep-related breathing disorders, including their modes of action, rationale for selection, design features and the evidence supporting their role.
