DescriptionA course for dental nurses designed to give them the confidence and competence to apply a disclosing material to a patient's teeth and to then record a score using a recognised indicy to help the patient to improve their oral hygiene. Also, to educate the DCP in the application of fluoride varnish to patients under the prescription of a dentist.

Aims
  • To provide the practical and theoretical knowledge and skills needed in order for DCPs to competently use disclosing materials, record the outcome, competently apply topical fluoride varnish and provide appropriate oral health advice.
Objectives

Students will be able to:-

  1. Check medical history.
  2. Prepare surgery with the required materials and equipment for plaque dislcoing and topical fluoride varnish application.
  3. Prepare the patient for plaque disclosing and topical fluoride varnish application.
  4. Be competent and use a safe technique during the practical application of disclosing solution and topical fluoride varnish, recording the outcome of plaque disclosing.
  5. Provide appropriate tooth brushing instruction and oral health advice.
  6. Be able to manage any complications that may occur.
  7. Ensure continunity of care for the patient.
Learning outcomes
  • Delegates will be able to confidently disclose and plaque score their patient under the prescription of a GDP and then apply a fluoride application.
