Subject | Medical emergencies
Description | This is a course based on medical emergency situations and other serious events that may be encountered in dental practice. There will be hands on simulation practice, case based studies and workshop discussions. Accidents and near misses occur in healthcare all the time but we rarely get the chance to practice or think through scenarios. This course introduces the concept of "human factors" training and events analysis to increase patient safety and efficiency of team working if such an event should happen. The course is suitable for all members of the team as individuals or as a team in order to practice coping with emergencies together. It is part of the core CPD topic of medical emergencies.
Additional information | This course is being taken by Andrew McIndoe MB ChB FRCA, Consultant Anaesthetist, University Hospitals Bristol NHS FT with a special interest in clinical simulation. He is also joint clinical lead for the Royal College of Anaesthetists national e-Learning Anaesthesia project. There are a high percentage of critical incidents where ‘Human Factors’ are implicated. These factors involve the non-technical skills of ability to work seamlessly in a team, situation awareness, communication and decision making. Bristol Medical Simulation Centre was the first of its kind in the UK. Andrew was initially trained in human factors by the UK ‘Virgin Atlantic’ team but then used this experience to apply the lessons learned in aviation to clinical practice. As a Director of BMSC he has 20 years experience of developing local, national and international multidisciplinary courses for trainees, consultants, GPs medical & dental students, ODPs, emergency physicians, obstetricians, and paramedics, including Team Training and Human Factors Courses (since 1998)
