DescriptionSimon Heyward and Pippa Blacklock will deliver a day of presentations supported with clinical and practical exercises. They will cover the management of common complications of minor oral surgery procedures that are undertaken in general dental practice. Guidelines for antibiotic prescribing, anticoagulant/antiplatelet therapy and protocols for nerve injury in practice will be discussed along with some risk assessment of cases using radiographs.
Additional information

Please note this course will not cover basic surgical skills and is a table top based course rather than a hands on phantom head course and will include:

  • suturing on skin boards
  • closure of an oral antral communication on a model
  • recording and interpreting vital observations BP
  • pulse, blood pressure, temperature
  • intra oral incision and drainage on a model

To manage (and treat where appropriate) common surgical complications in Dental Practice


Objectives

1. To review the management of post operative haemorrhage, infection, nerve injury, oral antral communications, and failed anaesthesia.

2. To practice surgical techniques for local haemostatic measures and closure of oral antral communications on surgical models.

3. To discuss examples of clinical cases and radiographs illustrating surgical complications.

4. To identify current guidance and protocols for the management of complications in practice

Learning outcomes

On completion of this study day participants will be able to:


1. Describe and discuss the management of common surgical complications presenting in Dental Practice

2. Demonstrate on surgical models techniques for local haemostatic measures and closure of Oral Antral Communications.

3. Interpret the radiographic signs of risk for nerve injury or antral involvement.

4. Apply the guidelines for Antibiotic prescribing, Anticoagulant/antiplatelet therapy, and protocols for nerve injury in practice.
