**Please note this is at the Postgraduate Medical Centre, this is a separate building at the rear of the main hospital building, and is in Seminar Room 4**

Please can delegates make themselves aware of the Public Health England Evidence based 'toolkit' - delivering better oral health, this can be viewed online or downloaded. This will be used in the afternoon session so you are welcome to bring their smart phones, tablets or laptops.

Aims

Morning:- What is black and white and red all over? Bacterial Plaque!

-To give an overview of tooth deposits and bacterial plaque, to show how these deposits contribute to dental diseases and how they are detrimental to oral and general health.

Afternoon: - Delivering Better Oral Health.

-To educate DCP's in the "bigger picture" of oral health education and oral health promotion.

Objectives

What is black and white and red all over? Bacterial Plaque:

(By the end of the lecture you should be able to)

  • List tooth deposits
  • Describe the formation of bacterial plaque
  • State what a biofilm is and how it works
  • Determine which bacteria cause which dental disease
  • Discuss the impact of bacterial plaque on general health

Delivering Better Oral Health

  • Define oral health promotion, oral health education, and prevention
  • Give diet advice and oral hygiene instruction to your patients
  • Use the Department of Health's toolkit to deliver better oral health
  • Describe available oral hygiene products
  • Discuss the benefits of fluoride
  • List and describe the different types of toothpaste on the market
  • List the mouthwashes on the market and describe their mode of action
Learning outcomes

Delegates will have attended a lecture and completed a quiz on bacterial plaque, they will be able to describe what it is and what it does and what it causes and will be able to determine whether it can cause or contribute to systemic disease.
