DescriptionA course for dental nurses designed to give them the confidence and competence to apply a disclosing material to a patient's teeth and to then record a score using a recognised indicy to help the patient to improve their oral hygiene. Also, to educate the DCP in the application of fluoride varnish to patients under the prescription of a dentist.
Additional information

 Two day course. Delegates must attend the theory /practical day 1 in order to attend the OSCE day , day 2.

course requirements:-

Delegates must be registered with the GDC

Delegates must be in current employment

Delegates must have professional indemnity cover

Delegates must have evidence of upto date CPD in BLS and medical emergencies

Delegates will be expected to attend both days and will be expected to record plaque indicies on patients in their work place and complete a record of experience with reflection.  Support from the dental surgeon is essential.  The DCP will also be expected to have completed their fluoride application patient log book so that they can be assessed during this session that they are competent to apply fluoride application, on a patient, from a prescription of their GDP within their own practices.

Aims

To provide the practical and theoretical knowledge and skills needed in order for DCPs to competently use disclosing materials, record the outcome, competently apply topical fluoride varnish and provide appropriate oral health advice.

Objectives

Students will be able to:-

  • Check medical history
  • Prepare surgery with the required materials and equipment for plaque dislcoing and topical fluoride varnish application
  • Prepare the patient for plaque disclosing and topical fluoride varnish application
  • Be competent and use a safe technique during the practical application of disclosing solution and topical fluoride varnish, recording the outcome of plaque disclosing
  • Provide appropriate tooth brushing instruction and oral health advice
  • Be able to manage any complications that may occur
  • Ensure continunity of care for the patient
