Description | One of the reasons that difficult conversations are difficult is that we make a great many assumptions about what is going on, so much so that we may even begin to behave as if they were true. We get anxious, lose sleep, get angry or hide in cupboards as a result of an assumption that we have turned in to a conclusion and then into a justification for action. Dealing with difficult conversations means that we have to address these assumptions first. We also need to be clear about just what it is that we want to say. Negotiators would talk about their ‘bottom line’, salespeople would make you their ‘final offer’ and young children simply repeat whatever it is over and over and over again. Being clear seems an obvious point to make, but it doesn’t always come naturally. | ||
