DescriptionThis is a day long course looking at various aspects of pain and pain control. Whilst concentrating on dental pain control and current use of local anaesthetics, there will be an opportunity to hear from our medical colleagues how they use pharmacology, psychology and complementary methods to effect coping strategies to painful conditions

Chris Bell is a well-known speaker in the region. He is Senior Clinical Lecturer in Oral & Dental Sciences at Bristol Dental Hospital.

Andrea Magides and Mark Human are both consultant anesthetists at Torbay Hospital.  Mark is one of the members of the team dealing with patients with chronic pain.

Craig Newman works part-time at the pain clinic at  Derriford Hospital Plymouth.

Aims

To give delegates an opportunity to update their knowledge on current method of pain relief and control, both for dental patients to learn of how other disciplines deal with pain.

Objectives

By the end of the day, delegates should

  1. have revised their appreciation of the anatomy and physiology of pain
  2. know the current recommendations on LA agents in dentistry
  3. have an appreciation of other methods of pain control in medicine
  4. know what treatments are currently available for chronic facial pain
