DescriptionThis lecture will critically appraise the current model for periodontitis management under the NHS and look to the future for how periodontal care can be provided effectively under an NHS contract. It will then briefly summarise the 2017 classification system into a simple to use format for general practice, and present exemplar cases and provide an overview of the world’s first dental S3-Level evidence-based treatment guidelines and dispel the myths that they are complex to implement.

Aims:

· Explain the challenges of trying to undertake periodontal care under the current NHS contract and why contract reform is necessary.

· Provide a simple guide to implementing the new periodontal classification in real world practice.

· Explaining the stepwise approach to periodontal therapy under the new S3-level international guidelines.

· Provide examples of key guidelines alongside case presentations to illustrate.

Objectives

· Understand how to implement the new classification rapidly in real world practice.

· Understand how and why the new S3-level treatment guidelines were developed and what they mean.

· Be able to follow the evidence-based guidelines in practice across the 4 steps of periodontal care management.

· Visualise how prevention rather than intervention underpins a modern NHS service contract.

By the end of this lecture, delegates will understand the limitations of periodontal care provision under the current contract and what the future may look like. Delegates will also be able to enhance patient care by providing the most contemporary evidence-based periodontal treatment. This lecture meets the criteria for category C of the GDC’s development outcomes for enhanced CPD (Maintenance and development of knowledge and skill within your field(s) of practice).
