SubjectCommunication skills
DescriptionThis workshop aims to demonstrate the range of skills needed for effective communication with people with disabilities. People come in all shapes, sizes and abilities and communicating with them can put our skills to the test. Flexibility in communication style is essential for anyone working with people with disabilities and we have many more approaches to it than we first realise. Ensuring we have consent is one of the most fundamental aspects of carrying out treatment. However, how can we be sure the patient understands what we are talking about and can make sense of it – enough to make an informed decision? We explore all the elements of gaining consent and ensuring that the patient knows enough to make the right decision. (This session ties in with the Mental Capacity Act).
