SubjectChild protection
DescriptionAwareness of child protection is important for everyone. The dental team may be well positioned to help in cases of child abuse and neglect. Signs of child abuse will be discussed, and information provided on what to do when concerns are raised. It is important to know the local referral pathways, to know what happens to the child immediately and to be aware of the possible long term outcomes after a referral is made. An insight into forensic odontology that is relevant to child abuse will be provided, and also opinions presented from healthcare professionals as to whether dental caries fits in with the spectrum of neglect.
