Aims

To discuss a number of different types of dental pain and to help delegates to appreciate that diagnosis and management of dental pain can be very logical if a systematic approach is adopted when taking a pain history. 

Objectives

1) To discuss the clinical presentation of a number of different causes of odontogenic pain that may present in general practice.Common non-odontogenic causes of oro-facial pain will also be briefly mentioned.

2) To briefly discuss the underlying physiology that underpins the patients symptoms.

3) To discuss the appropriate clinical managemant of a patient with dental pain,including when it may be necessary to refer the patient to a secondary care setting.
