DescriptionThis day course covers occlusal splints, occlusion and how to fix it. Topics include occlusal splints for TMD, bruxists, clenchers, headaches, TMJ clicks, TMJ pain, snorers, tooth wear and cracked tooth syndrome. Brian will also cover dealing with localised tooth wear on anterior and posterior teeth and dealing with generalised wear. There will be hands on elements looking at different types of splints and managing toothwear cases.

This is the second of two days Prof. Brian Millar is providing in Cornwall.

These courses can be booked as separate days or it is an ideal opportunity to make the most of such a lovely area and book onto both.

Aims

The aim of this course is to teach the important features of occlusion, to understand when and how to intervene in a safe and ethical way, how and when to use occlusal splints, and provide a deeper understanding of the causes, intervention options and management of tooth wear.

Objectives

By the end of this courses delegates should:

 

  1. be able to explain the clinical records for each splint including impressions, jaw registrations and facebow records where necessary
  2. be able to demonstrate how to fit and adjust each splint
  3. recognise how and when to use different splints safely to treat clenchers, bruxists and tooth wear
  4. be able to describe tooth wear diagnosis and intervention options from monitoring and prevention to intervention.
  5. recognise how to intervene using contemporary material to replace missing tissue and correct occlusal problems due to too surface loss, restoring function and aesthetics while protecting the teeth.
  6. explain how to be able to quickly and correctly check the occlusion before and after placing restorations
Learning outcomes

At the end of the course participants will:

Be able to select and use a splint for a range of clinical situations including clenching, bruxists, TMD, 

Be able to successfully use occlusal splints

Know how to fit, adjust and monitor splints

Be able to treat TMD and tooth wear more effectively

Understand how to check the occlusion and when to change the occlusion when restoring teeth particularly in a tooth wear case

Know how and when to use Dahl and when not to use it
